One night I’d spend in Newtown

My pick

  • A film at the Dendy, 261 King Street. It has ten screens and a bar.
  • Dinner at Thai Pothong, 294 King Street, open since 1996 and big enough for 450. Expect at least one birthday song.
  • Late: Pleasure Club, the basement bar under King Street by Newtown station. It was the first Newtown venue in a century to get a 4am licence, seven nights a week.

The property side

  • Housing mix: 52.0% semis and terraces, 39.8% apartments, just 5.0% freestanding houses. Most homes are rented.
  • Pockets: King Street and Enmore Road together make up the longest and most complete late-Victorian and Federation commercial precinct in Australia. Behind them are narrow Victorian terraces, many of them two-up two-down.
  • Transport: Newtown station on the Inner West lines, plus buses along King Street.
  • Schools in and around the suburb include Australia Street Infants, Camdenville Public, Newtown Public, North Newtown Public and Newtown High School of the Performing Arts. Catchments are address-specific, so check yours on NSW School Finder.
  • Newtown is split between the City of Sydney and Inner West councils.
