One thing I’d do in Petersham
My pick
Brunch at Brothers Ben Atelier on Palace Street, then a slow lap of Petersham Park.
The Atelier is the newer Brothers Ben outpost at 49 Palace Street, opened in July 2026 directly across from the original cafe, and it has built a following for its chocolate cake. Then walk five minutes to Petersham Park: the cricket oval, the rotunda, the Fanny Durack Aquatic Centre, and the ground where an 18-year-old Don Bradman made his first first-grade century in November 1926.

The property side
- Housing mix: 47.2% apartments, 26.5% semis and terraces, 22.5% freestanding houses. Just over half of homes are rented.
- Pockets: Victorian and Edwardian mansions around Petersham Park; the Portuguese strip on New Canterbury Road; Audley Street, home of the Bairro Português festival.
- Transport: Petersham station on the Inner West lines. The station building (1886) is one of the grandest surviving 19th-century stations in Sydney.
- Schools in and around the suburb include Petersham Public, Taverners Hill Public (infants) and Fort Street High (selective). Catchments are address-specific, so check yours on NSW School Finder.
- My recent Petersham results: 11 Croydon Street, $4.5M off-market; 10 Middleton Street, $3.31M at auction; 40 Audley Street, $2.4M; 40 Station Street, $2.311M at auction; 9 Fishers Reserve, $1.63M.
